Mindfulness is developed by purposefully paying attention in a sustained and non-judgmental way, to what is going on in your body, your mind, and in the world around you. It is about being awake and aware, living in the present—simply being yourself and knowing something about who that is.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is often defined as the ability to attend in a nonjudgmental way to one’s own physical and mental processes during ordinary, everyday tasks [1].

A consensus two-component mindfulness definition stated that “The first component involves the self-regulation of attention so that it is maintained on immediate experience, thereby allowing for increased recognition of mental events in the present moment. The second component involves adopting a particular orientation toward one’s experiences in the present moment, an orientation that is characterized by curiosity, openness, and acceptance” [2].

Mindfulness and CV Health Lab

Mission Statement:
“To provide research and education on evidence-based programs through which mindfulness can improve cardiovascular health.”

The lab is dedicated to evaluating the effects of mindfulness on heart disease and stroke risk factors, such as blood pressure, obesity, diet and physical activity. It also provides a resource to educate the community on interventions that work, through information shared on this website and in-person programs at Brown University in Providence, RI. We also provide training programs for students interested in being trained in the mindfulness research and interventions.
